Chaffee County Colorado is located in the heart of the Colorado Rocky Mountains and the Upper Arkansas River Valley.
Buena Vista sits at the top of the valley on the Arkansas River with the Collegiate Peaks, several 14ers, overlooking the town, ranches and homes below. This is a community that most people dream of, unpretentious, welcoming people in a great place to live and play.
Salida is 25 miles south has been ranked among the best small art towns in the US and named as one of the “Best American Dream Towns” by Outdoor Magazine.
Nathrop sits in between with rich lush farm lands, the Chalk Cliffs and the home to Mt Princeton Hot Springs Resort.
We are bordered by the Sawatch range on the west which hosts the Collegiate Peaks. Pike National Forest is to the east and the Arkansas River runs down the valley.
The quaint historical towns of Buena Vista and Salida pride themselves on their historic charm and stunning natural beauty. Each with distinctive character and charm offer a slower paced, friendly, quality of lifestyle. The communities offer the true small town feel with all modern amenities.
Chaffee County is a year round Mecca for the outdoor enthusiast whether it be hiking or biking our numerous mountain trails or 14ers mountains, paddling on a raft or kayak our mountain lakes and class 5 river or skiing or snowmobiling. Our local ski area Monarch and surrounding ones such as Copper Mtn, Ski Cooper, Vail, Breckenridge, Keystone offer outstanding down hill and cross country skiing. We can’t forget world class fishing including ice fishing available on our lakes, creeks and river.
The semi-arid climate provides little humidity with summer highs 78-80 degrees average and winter highs 45-55 degrees average. With warm days and cool nights “the banana belt of the Rockies” provides 300 days average of sunshine per year.
The area is the crossroads for US Hwy 24, 50 and 285. Approximately 2.5 hrs from Denver, 2 hrs from Colorado Springs and Pueblo and 1 hour to Gunnison with roads being accessible year round.
