Buena Vista Colorado & Chaffee County Area History

The Whitewater Capital Of The World!
In Central Colorado On The East Slope Of The Continental Divide

Tiny little Buena Vista, nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, is the sort of community most people only dream of. It was peacefully settled around 1864, contrary to the wild and woolly background of nearby mining towns. Even the name (Spanish for Beautiful View) suggests serenity.

Buena Vista was an important supply town and sat at the junctions of 3 early railroads: the Denver and Rio
Grande, Colorado Midland and Colorado Southern.

The town grew along with Salida, its rival to the south. In 1880
Buena Vista became the Chaffee County Seat after a bitter fight
with Salida.

Obviously Buena Vista was a tough place and they had their hanging judge to keep order. Judge Lynch, yes that's right, Lynch, was known for liberal use of the death penalty and seldom allowed appeal. It was a common site to see the Judge's customers hanging from the trees around town. As time went on, the state reformatory was located at Buena Vista.
